BE A HEARER AND A DOER
James 1:16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.
James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
James 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Brothers, James, Jesus' earthly half brother, tells us here the truth that every good and perfect gift comes down from God the Father, and is unwavering, and turns not into evilness. James tells us that we were born by his spoken word which is truth, and that we are his firstfruits of all his creatures.
James 1:19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
James 1:20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
Brothers, we as God's children are to hear swiftly, but to be slow to speak and slow to wrath. He tells us here that wrath works unrighteousness as the carnal world works unrighteousness. We are to be swift to hear what every man says, receiving God's word swiftly as we hear his word guide our response righteously.
SLOW TO SPEAK! This response takes practice brothers, for it is the evil nature of man to respond rapidly in both speech and wrath. We can learn to be slow to speak and slow to anger. Ask the Holy Spirit who dwells inside you to remind you of this each time your flesh responds swiftly to a perceived wrong of any kind. He will tell you when you sin. Ask God's forgiveness and continue your walk. You will begin to speak more and more slowly until it becomes your nature to do so.
James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
James 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
James 1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
James 1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
With meekness we are to receive the engrafted word of God which saves our souls. Just as we are to hear swiftly we are also to be doers of God's word.
James 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
Brothers, James tells us here that if we do not both hear, and do His word then we are like an earthly and carnal man who loves to look into a glass to gaze upon his own reflection and going his own way thinking himself righteous. We are instead to look upon the perfect word of God and walk in God's way, not in mans way. By being in the perfect law of liberty, and continuing therein being both a hearer and doer of His Holy Word, then James tells us that we shall be a man blessed by God in his deeds.
Brothers, be both a hearer and a doer of God's word.
God Bless you my brothers,
