John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Brothers, God made us spirit before we were born. We all have a spirit. We who are saved by Jesus Christ also have God's very own Holy Spirit which came to live inside each of us who are born again, who are saved. Please notice that our spirit is spelled with a small s, but God's Holy Spirit is always a capital S.

We as children of God are to try every spirit which means every person that professes to be of God. He tells us plainly in verse 1 above that there are many false prophets, and false teachers already in this world this day. We are to test these spirits. Read and study the next five verses to see how we are to try, or test these spirits to see if they are from God.
John 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

Brothers, we know that the spirit is of God if they confess that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. If this man professes that Jesus has come in the flesh then he is of God. If you try him by asking if he believes that Jesus the Messiah (remember Messiah in Hebrew is Christ, and this is where we get the English word Christ from) came in the flesh, and he answers yes then he is of God. But, if he does not say that Jesus Christ came in the flesh then he is antichrist and not of God. If he says that he believes that Jesus was a great profit, but does not say that he is the Christ who came in the flesh then he is not of God

John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

We as born again children of God have overcome the spirit of antichrist. We were once like them until we accepted Jesus Christ as the Son of God who came in the flesh. God's very own Holy Spirit is greater than the antichrist of this world. We have overcome this world. God has come to live inside us because we know that Jesus came in the flesh to save us from this world.

John 4:5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

The lost world is antichrist. God's word tells us that if you deny Jesus Christ as being the Son of God who came in the flesh then you are antichrist. We are told here in verse five that the world speaks and the world hears what they speak. The lost can hear the lost world when they speak anything. But, they can only hear the world, they can not  hear those of us who are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ.

John 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

Brothers, we are of God. We who know God are heard by all who know God. He who is not of God can not hear us. This is how we know those who are of the spirit of truth, of God.

We are to try all spirits to see weather they are of God.

God Bless you my brothers,

John Hipp
