TO THE CHURCH AT LAODICEA
14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
Brothers, this may be the harshest words that Jesus spoke to any of the seven Churches. He says here that he knows their works to be neither hot nor cold.
What does neither hot nor cold really mean?
It means that they are indifferent in their works. They are going through the motions of their work for Christ Jesus. They have lost their joy that comes from serving God.
They may even attend every religious service in their respective churches, but they are not being fed. Because they are not fed they can not feed their brothers, or those who are lost, and in need of the food for the spirit, the Holy gospel.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
Jesus says that because they are lukewarm that he will spue them from his mouth. These Christians of this day actually make Jesus sick to his stomach. He has rebuked the other six churches very strongly, but not to this point.
Let's read on and see what else is wrong with these Christians who live now in our time. Brothers, Jesus is speaking to His Church of this day.
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
Brothers, see here that these Christians think that they are rich, and increased with the things of this world, and that they don't need anything. Not from man, and not from God.
All that they possess they believe that they themselves have attained it by their on work, and that they deserve all that they possess.
He says that they believe that they have need of nothing from God the Father or the Son. This is a very dangerous mind set to live in.
Do you know Christians like this? I am sure that you do. You may live next door to them, or you may work with them every day. You may even sit beside them every Sunday in your chosen Sanctuary. Brothers, this may even be you, and your family.
Remember that you and I are the Church. Jesus is speaking to you and I.
Jesus goes on to say that these Christians do not even know the condition of their souls. He says that they do not know how that they appear to Him and the Father.
They are wretched, and miserable human beings, and he will spue them from his mouth. Jesus says that they are poor even though they think that they are rich. Poor, wretched, miserable.
He says that they are blind that they can not see the wretched condition of their souls. Jesus says that they may have all of these fine possessions which they have purchased from this lost, and dying world, but that they stand naked before him.
My brothers nothing is hidden before Jesus who will judge you.
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
Jesus asks that they would buy from him the gold that has been tried in the fire that they might be truly rich. Not rich with money or possessions, but rather rich in his Holy word, and in his peace, joy, love, forgiveness, and his strength to continue doing His work.
Jesus pleads with them to be clothed in the white raiment that only a child of God can be. He asks them to receive from him the eyesalve that will open their blind eyes that they may see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Jesus tells them that they must repent, and that they must once again follow after him with an open heart, and a desire to serve him. He says that those that he loves he will rebuke and chasten.
Jesus says that he is knocking at the door, and that if any will hear his voice, and open the door that he will come in and eat the bread of his Holy word with them. Do you see here that you must hear His knocking at the door of your heart, and that you must open the door that He may come in and live inside your heart.
He will not beat the door down. He will only knock. You must hear his knocking.
21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Jesus tells the Church at Laodicea that they must overcome. If they will only turn to him then he will grant them to sit with he and the Father in heaven.
Brothers, is Jesus knocking at your door? Have your put your possessions in this life above your love for God?
22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
Brothers, this letter is written to you, and I who live in this day, and time. All of these seven letters are for us. But, none more pointedly addressed to us than this one.
We live in a time where we have many more things than our fathers and mothers had. We walk after the things of this world more than any generation before us.
You may say that your fellow believers are not worshiping false gods. But, you would be wrong.
But, do you see that placing such importance on obtaining, and keeping all that they possess is in fact putting those things above God.
He said that they think that they were rich, and increased with goods. Is that not in fact what many of you think.
Brothers, I hope and pray that you do not see yourself in this letter. But, if you do or if you see your loved ones, and your neighbors in this letter then please share with them what the Holy Spirit has given me here to speak to all of my brothers in Christ Jesus who live in this day.
Jesus himself is speaking these worlds to his Church here in the second and third chapters of the book of Revelation.
Please see, please hear, please open the door, and allow Jesus to come in, and live inside you. Please put Him first in your life.
Repent, overcome, turn away from evil. He is knocking please open the door, and do not believe the lies that this world is telling you in this day.
Jesus is coming soon!
God Bless you my brothers,
